Speaking at an energy efficiency seminar, Ali Rabani, acting head of
energy optimization at NPC, highlighted challenges in energy management despite
Iran’s vast reserves. "Proper utilization of these resources requires
collaboration among stakeholders and cutting-edge technologies," he
stated.
Rabani stressed that global energy demand is rising, while Iran’s
renewable energy usage remains minimal despite its high potential. He pointed
to NPC’s efforts in upstream investments, flare gas recovery, and renewable
energy integration, stating that 76% of petrochemical firms currently comply
with energy consumption standards. The goal is to achieve full compliance
within five years through 13 targeted strategies.
He also called for reforming Iran’s energy governance to address high
energy intensity and improve resource monetization. Rabani noted that pricing
reforms are key to encouraging industries to reduce consumption, suggesting a
dual-pricing system for households and industries over the next five years, aligning
with international practices.
NPC has faced gas supply shortages, with natural gas mispricing in
commercial and industrial sectors reducing incentives for energy efficiency.
The petrochemical industry suffered gas supply constraints in the past two months,
resulting in an estimated $2.5 billion monthly revenue loss for the government.
Supply disruptions have also lowered domestic availability of
feedstock for downstream industries, reduced foreign exchange revenues due to
lower exports, and increased economic risks for new investments, Rabani warned.
To mitigate gas shortages, NPC is engaging in national energy-saving
initiatives. Rabani highlighted the "10% Gas and Electricity Reduction
Campaign", launched in partnership with non-governmental organizations,
which promotes energy conservation without compromising living standards.
Participants in the campaign can register via NABZENERGY.ir, accessing
subsidized appliance upgrades as part of broader efforts to improve energy
efficiency, economic stability, and environmental sustainability.
Rabani expressed hope that nationwide cooperation would foster a
culture of responsible energy consumption, urging industries and households to
contribute to long-term energy security.
