TEHRAN (NIPNA) - Managing flare gas emissions has emerged as a critical priority for Iran's petrochemical industry, according to Hassan Abbaszadeh, Deputy Petroleum Minister and CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC).

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Special Task Force on Flare Gas Management and Reduction, Abbaszadeh emphasized the industry's dual focus on environmental stewardship and resource optimization. “Implementing strategies to capture flare gas not only safeguards the environment but also provides a valuable feedstock to strengthen the value chain within the petrochemical sector,” he said.

The session featured an analytical presentation by NPC’s HSE management team, outlining the current state of flaring across petrochemical complexes. Key discussions included Iran's global and regional standing in flaring, detailed assessments of flare gas composition (CO2, CH4, N2, H2, CO, C2H6, and others), and environmental and production metrics from flaring activities in the Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in Asaluyeh.

The task force reviewed the economic implications of wasted flare gas, its environmental impact, and opportunities enabled by Iran's seventh development plan, which prioritizes petrochemical investments in gas fields and flare gas recovery projects.

This initiative builds on a resolution from a recent technical meeting involving senior NPC executives, which called for the establishment of a specialized working group. The group will focus on production control, health, safety, and environmental management, as well as energy optimization and investment opportunities in flare gas recovery.

“By addressing flare gas emissions comprehensively, the industry not only meets its environmental obligations but also enhances operational efficiency and creates a sustainable pathway for future growth,” Abbaszadeh concluded.
