TEHRAN (NIPNA) - The para-xylene unit at the Bu Ali Sina Petrochemical Complex has resumed operations, boasting an annual production capacity of 430,000 tons following extensive reconstruction and modernization efforts.

On Monday, June 24, 2024, the para-xylene unit was officially inaugurated by Acting President Mohammad Mokhber, in a ceremony attended by Petroleum Minister Javad Owji and Morteza Shahmirzaei, Deputy Minister of Oil and CEO of the National Petrochemical Company, through video conference.

The unit's reconstruction, initiated after a fire incident in the summer of 2016, involved a $40 million investment and relied heavily on the expertise of Iranian companies. The project, which began in October 2019, employed up to 250 local workers during its execution phase and now provides direct employment for over 80 individuals.

The centerpiece of this project, Tower 8001, is the tallest structure in Iran's petrochemical industry, standing over 100 meters high, weighing 1,200 tons, and measuring 8 meters in diameter. This tower was constructed domestically with innovative design improvements over its predecessor, showcasing Bu Ali Sina Petrochemical's commitment to utilizing local resources and technology.

Located on a 36-hectare site in the northwest of the Persian Gulf, within the Bandar Imam Khomeini Special Economic Zone in Khuzestan Province, the Bu Ali Sina Petrochemical Complex is Iran's third aromatics project. Its construction began in April 2001, with production units becoming operational in 2004.

The successful restoration and operation of the para-xylene unit highlight Iran's capability to overcome industrial setbacks and enhance its petrochemical production infrastructure, contributing significantly to the local economy and the broader petrochemical industry.
