Ahmad Reza Heidarnia emphasized their commitment to environmental
stewardship and continuous monitoring of the company's investments and
environmental initiatives over the years. It is their belief that Shiraz
Petrochemical Plant has a responsible role in the field of environmental
conservation, and all their environmental projects will serve as a successful
model for other industries in the country.
Preserving the environment has always been a top priority for the
company. With a serious focus on reducing wastewater production, recycling, and
managing both process and non-process industries, their dedicated employees at Shiraz
Petrochemical Plant are actively working towards sustainable solutions.
The CEO of Shiraz Petrochemical Plant reminded us that saying "no
to plastic pollution" is not merely a choice but an obligatory commitment
to life, especially for future generations. With over 50 years of experience in
the economic sector, the company has strived to align its activities with
environmental preservation, ensuring that they adopt a special approach. Their
efforts have led to the successful implementation of the Clean Development
Mechanism (CDM) and its registration with the Kyoto Protocol's secretariat, as
well as obtaining carbon reduction certification from the United Nations,
making Shiraz Petrochemical Plant the first petrochemical factory in the
country dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Furthermore, the company's voluntary initiatives include obtaining the
ISO 14001 international standard for environmental management systems and
upgrading it to the latest edition in 2015. Alongside these endeavors, Shiraz
Petrochemical Plant has taken the initiative to create and maintain 155
hectares of green spaces on their premises, surpassing the legal standards and
requirements by more than tenfold.
The CEO of Shiraz Petrochemical Plant continued to highlight the
company's success and efforts in environmental preservation. With unwavering
dedication, the company has received numerous awards in the field of
environmental management and green initiatives from national and international
entities, including the Green Management Symposium, both domestically and
abroad. Leveraging the knowledge and expertise of their employees, the company
has maximized water efficiency within their systems and implemented projects
such as wastewater treatment, resulting in a significant reduction of 60 cubic
meters per day in wastewater discharge and subsequent water extraction from regional
resources. This endeavor has further led to decommissioning more than 12 older
units, resulting in a reduction of over 1,000 cubic meters of wastewater per
day.
Additionally, units such as gas, ammonia, urea, nitric acid, ammonium
nitrate, NPK, light and heavy soda ash, and sweet caustic soda in the area have
been brought into compliance.
Regarding waste management, Shiraz Petrochemical Plant has
continuously controlled and managed process and non-process waste, ensuring
their reuse whenever possible. In line with this approach, a landfill site has
been constructed to properly dispose of industrial waste and prevent
environmental contamination on the company's lands. The implementation and
improvement of administrative automation systems have significantly reduced
paper consumption across the company's administrative departments, thereby
minimizing waste generation.
The CEO of Shiraz Petrochemical Plant further stated that as a result
of these initiatives, they have contributed to achieving 37% of the petrochemical
industry's commitments to greenhouse gas emission reduction until 2030, based
on the Islamic Republic of Iran's commitments at the COP2015 annual summit in
Paris.
He added that receiving the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
certificate in 2017, along with significant greenhouse gas emission reductions
in line with the Islamic Republic of Iran's commitments, the Golden Trophy from
the Ministry of Petroleum for environmental and social responsibilities, and
the certificate for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 780,000 tons from
the United Nations are among the company's achievements. They have also
successfully monitored the environmental pollutants of output towers for urea
and ammonium nitrate production units for 18 consecutive months. The environmental
monitoring system has been extended to the output tower of the nitric acid unit
and three HRSG towers, contributing to the company's environmental preservation
efforts.
Shiraz Petrochemical Plant has been recognized and certified by
internal and external audit authorities and regulatory agencies for its
commitment to environmental protection. Some of the notable certifications and
awards include the Clean Industry certificate in 1998 for surpassing the
national standards in developing green spaces, the Green Industry certificate
in 1999 for environmental development and initiatives, the ISO 14001
environmental management system certification in 2001, the Selected Green
Industry certificate in 2001 for extensive environmental initiatives and green
space development, the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) certificate and
its implementation across the complex in 2005, the Level 3 Green Commitment
plaque from Iran's Green Management Festival in 2007, the Crystal Trophy and
plaque from the Green Economy Festival in 2004, 2005, and 2008, the Gold Trophy
from the 2nd Symposium on Iran's Developed Industries in 2008, the Appreciation
Plaque from the Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade in 2015, the
International National Award certificate from Energy Globe in 2017, the upgrade
of the ISO 14001 environmental management system to the 2015 edition in 2020,
and the trophy and plaque from the Hatem National Production Support Festival
in 2021. In addition to these accomplishments, the CDM project and the development
of the environmental policy of the Shiraz Petrochemical Plant complex in 2023
have been major milestones for the company.
