TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Iran has started construction of Sadaf Petrochemical Project for production of raw materials needed in making green tires. The project is the first one of its kind in the Middle East region.

A ceremony was held on Tuesday to start construction of the ESBR (Emulsion copolymer of butadiene & styrene) unit of the project which will process 5 strategic grades of the item. ESBR is needed in tire tread compound development.

Top petrochemical officials including Abbas Shari-Moqaddam, head of National Petrochemical Company (NPC), attended the ceremony to break the grounds for construction of the project.

The project is scheduled to come on-stream in 29 months.

Boosting safety of cars, preservation of the environment and cutting fuel consumption are some of the features of ESBR tires.

Once completed the high-tech unit will be the first one in the region to be constructed by relying on domestic technical prowess.

The unit is being developed for production of 136,000 tons of ESBR which will be used for making quality, safe and environmentally-friendly tires.

Sadaf Petrochemical Project is being constructed with an investment of 102 million euro from the country's rainy-day kitty, National Development Fund of Iran (NDFI). The rest of the 255 million euros of the finances needed for the project will be supplied from domestic investors.

An annual amount of 5.2mt of ESBR is being produced in the world which will reach 7.8mt by 2020.
