TEHRAN (NIPNA) – The death toll of accidents in Iran's petrochemical plants has fallen some 85% through the past 3 decades, an HSE official with National Petrochemical Company (NPC) said.

Ghodratollah Nasiri, NPC's chief of health, safety and environment (HSE) department, said last week that much development has been made in health, security and environmental issues in petrochemical plants across the country.

The company's HSE department was launched no earlier than three decades ago, but has made much progress during the period, said Nasiri.

He said the department has spent nearly IRR2,500 billion for preservation of the environment by creating greenery around petrochemical plants.

On average, Iranian petrochemical plants are surrounded by green areas that cover 67% of their land which is much higher than world standards of at least 10% of land.

He further added that the department has pursued planting of more than 10 million trees in Mahshahr region, south of Iran.
