The state-of-the-art nitrogen facility in Topolobampo will be the largest in Latin America, with a capacity of 2,200 tonnes/day of ammonia, equivalent to around 770,000 tonnes/year.
The plant, which was initially announced in 2013, will produce ammonia for the domestic and international market, although project leaders did not provide an update on the potential construction of a second ammonia plant at the site or a possible urea line.
Originally due to start up in 2016, the facility is being constructed by leading Switzerland-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) group Proman, on behalf of the state and federal governments.
Officials hope the plant will reduce Mexico’s dependence on ammonia imports, as the country currently purchases around 500,000 tonnes/year of the nitrogen fertilizer for agricultural and industrial purposes.
